Technology & Water Don’t Mix / Glad I Bought the Warranties.

Okay, so I write this in complete frustration.  Mostly at myself, but also with the thought… is nothing EASY anymore?!

So last night, after a fabulous Duck Dodge, I managed to ruin my beloved digital camera and my phone… all in one fell swoop.  I am really talented. To be honest this really didn’t phase me at first.  I hate to say that I am that clumsy girl who goes through about one digital camera per year.  Here’s a brief history:

  • Four years ago I had a battle with my memory card which took my Canon ELPH victim.
  • Three years ago the replacement ELPH that my dad gave me, the Canon Powershot ELPH, was dropped, oops.
  • The replacement for that, the Sony Cybershot DSC T1, lasted for about a year before it was accidentally dropped in a pitcher of beer last July.
  • His replacement, the Canon SD850 had a bottle of water accidentally poured on top of him while inside my purse last night.   He (along with my Treo) is now on the fritz.  He turns off and on at random until the entire battery is drained - awesome.

After this history with my cameras, I decided to buy the warranty last year when I bought my last Canon.  I lovingly dubbed it the ‘drunk girl’ warranty as it protects against accidental damage, water damage and dropping it (all things I seem to do to my gadgets when I get drunk).   Unfortunately when I took the camera back to Best Buy today to use the warranty, they have to send off my camera for a couple weeks to attempt to fix it.  Me, without a camera for a couple weeks?  I don’t think so.  So, I had to buy a ‘loaner’ that I’ll be promptly taking back for a full refund in two weeks.  Hopefully the loaner will at least get me through the Europe trip. Of course, I got home and find that my Sony Cybershot ‘loaner’ charger and computer cords were missing from the box!! UGH!! Why is nothing easy???  Looks like I am going back to Best Buy again tomorrow after already spending two hours there today (although frankly 1/3 of that was spent playing on the Guitar Hero demo stations).

Tomorrow I also need to work on getting the phone replaced (which I also bought the warranty for).  My Treo is literally going crazy and is possibly possessed due to the waterboarding he experienced in my purse.  Right now, I can see emails - but can’t respond/delete/do anything to them; the phone constantly tries to check my voicemail (over and over and over again); I can answer calls but it constantly goes on/off hold so I can’t hear the person on the other end; and lots of blank emails/texts are getting sent to my contacts.  If you’ve gotten one from me, sorry!

Moral of the story for me is, technology and water just don’t mix… and if you’re clumsy like me - buy the warranties.  I always seem to use them.
