In just a few hours I am off to Walla Walla (aka: home) for the weekend. I’ve been going home alot these days, visiting my mom who has been in and out of the hospital for the last couple months. However this weekend a layer of fun was added when I realized that it was Balloon Stampede Weekend.
This is one of those events I really enjoyed while growing up in Walla Walla, but never realized how truly unique and cool it was until moving away. I mean, how often do you spot hot air balloons anymore?! In Walla Walla, they are really quite the common sighting.
There are two things I love most about Balloon Stampede weekend. The first is waking up to the sound of hot air balloons rising over my parents’ house. That sound of the hot air burners is VERY recognizable to a Walla Wallan. :) When I was younger, I would hear that sound early in the morning and leap out of bed to rush outside in my pajamas just to wave at the balloons floating overhead. The second thing I love most about the Balloon Stampede is the Night Glow. Night Glow is when a number of balloons tether to the ground and run the burners - when I was younger I thought they looked like giant light bulbs.
I’m looking forward to a great weekend of reliving one of my favorite childhood events and having the chance to share the experience with Kevin. I have a feeling he’ll love the Balloon Stampede as much as I do!
